As for swimmers, during a
‘Volunteer Encampment’ in
1863, 500 men pitched their
tents at Maidenhead and
‘owing to the close proximity
of the river Thames, it is
expected a cold bath will be
the order of the morning’.
Weeds had ‘been cut for
some distance, and a portion
of the water roped off for
those who cannot swim,
added to which men will be
in attendance each morning
