cinephile.Hewas kind,generous,patient,

in the PanamaCanalZone.Atthe outbreakof
WWII,Fred returnedto the U.S. and spenthis
formativeyearsin Ohio with hisAuntBert and
UncleHarvey.HegraduatedfromCuyahoga
Falls HighSchool.He thenattendedthe
UniversityofVirginiawherehe met the love of
his life,Polly Smith.Theyweremarriedin the
Universityof VirginiaChapelon December
21, 1956.Fred servedfor over threedecades
as an Armorand SpecialForcesOfficer.His
servicespannedsix continentsand included
avarietyof specialassignments,notablyU.S.

Finally,lateinthe1960’s,Johnbeganhis
studiesatHarvard.Graduatinginthesum-
merof1972,hethenmarriedtheformer
SuellenMutchowonJune30thintheAp-
pletonChapelatHarvard.Suellenwasat
thetimeworkingwithearlyEnglishprinted
booksin Harvard’sHoughtonLibrary.
HighlyinfluencedbyanintensiveHarvard
summerschoolcourseinpsychology,John
discoveredhisfuturecallingasapsychol-
ogist.OncethecoupleresettledinMcLean,
Virginia,in 1974 Johnbeganworkatthe
WoodburnCenterfor CommunityMen-
talHealthinAnnandale,Virginia -located
nexttothethenFairfaxHospital.Woodburn
wasamodelcommunityhealthcenterand
wasthesettingin 1980 forJimmyCarter’s

Johnearnedamaster’sinpsychologyand
workedasapsychotherapistatWoodburn
untilhisretirementin2001.Afterthat,he
continuedwithaparttimeprivatepractice.
John was an especiallycompassionate
psychologist,givingfreelyofhistimeand
frequentlyreceivingsomeofthemorechal-
lengingcasesatthecenter.Holidaycards
andcontinuingcontactwithsomeofhis
formerpatientsattesttothewayinwhich
hewasabletoimprovelives.
Johnwasknownforhispositiveattitude,
friendly,cheerfulpersonality,enthusiasms,
loveofbeauty(sunsets,thesceneryofthe
southwest)andaboveallforhisloyaltyto
family,friends,country,andtheGreenBay
Packers.Duringhis timewiththeMerchant
Marines,Johnsustainedaseriousheadin-
jurythatresultedinlongmonthsofthera-
py.Notonlydidthisstruggleillustratehis
indomitablespirit,butit providedhimwith
specialempathyforpatientsenduringset-
backs.
Neveronetowastefreetime,inthe1970’s
andbeyondJohnspentmanydaysonthe
EasternShore,enjoyingatopographythat
remindedhimoftheareaaroundhisbe-
lovedSavannah.Thenhediscoveredgolf.
Thisbecamethepassionofhislastfourde-
cades.Lovingthearchitectureofthecours-
es,hewentoutofhiswaytovisitlegendary
ones.SummersinWisconsingavehimac-
cesstofabulouscoursesthere.Johnplayed
locallyattheWestwoodCountryClub,
wherehewasabletocontinueasociallife
evenduringCovid.Manywereamusedat
thewayinwhichhedutifullyreportedinto
hiswife,knownasHQ(Headquarters).
Johnis survivedbyhiswifeof 50 years,Suel-

she wed US NavySupplyCorpsofficerCharles
LawrenceKnightof NewOrleans,movingon to
multipletoursof dutyin the US and abroad,
until finallysettlingthe familyin DC in 1960.Her
husbandCaptainLarryKnight,predeceased
her in 1975.Our fatherand she weredevoted
to education,and personalbettermentfor all
children,oftenopeningtheirhometo numer-
ous relativesand friendsfromLouisiana,Hon-
duras and other countries.Aminta was
employedat the Organizationof American
Statesfor 19 years.She was ableto pursue
charityinitiativeswithgroupssuchas Navy
Relief,PALCOandthe Honduran Women’s
Societywhichshe helpedfound.She is also
survivedby her grandchildren,NoelleKnight
(SylvanusMars),BryanaArmstrong(Michael)
and Lawrence,and great grandchildren

Nancydid patentworkall overthe world,
becomingfluentin Japanesein the process.
She also dabbledin politics,asthe Libertarian
candidatefor DC Mayorin 1990and Vice-
Presidentin 1992.
