  1. Stela, rounded at the top, 4 1 cm. high, 29 cm. large ; lime
    stone. In the middle of the upperparta naos surmounted by
    urxus-serpents bearingon their headsthe©. Thenaoscontains
    a sitting femaledivinitywiththe head of a hippopotamus, in the right
    handT, in the left .¥•, on the head «3t between the cow-horns. There


is written beforeher Q *K\ -*"'Q LL ]& JK^ TF I •* Before this
naos is an altar with flowers and cakes, above the inscription

inI j zse* (sic) =. Behind the naos a group
of three finely drawn Dum palms without fruit, above them
^'^a^^*Q^%FS?\ vO l- The dividing of the tree in its
upperpartintotwo branches,and each of these branchesintotwo
twigs,is very wellrendered.
Thelowerpartof the stela showsa man andhis wife kneeling
in adoration ; the accompanying inscriptionin vertical linessays:

" Make adoration to Ta-urt of the Dum palms, proscynesisto the
lady of the two lands, she may givea good burialaftersenility,
that ' my name mayremainin her temple ' to the person of the
scribeof the ast Maa Rames; his beloved sister, the lady of the
house,the servant of Ta-urt fUba." In the list of the functionaries

* Instead of ^m*" the original showshereandsomelinesbelowa vertical
trunk,out of which growtwo branches ; each of these dividesinto two twigs, of
whichthe inner onescrossone another. In the first instance eachtwigendswith
a triangle.
