It is this passage thatled Eisenlohr to read the measure ..-O

heqatas besha, butthe mistake wasdueto the scribe omittingto

repeat the sign /O.

Nos. 72 to 78. These are very interesting,as showing the method

of valuing andexchangingbreadandbeer. Thesolebasisof value

was the pefsu, the number of loaves or of jars of beer whichcould

be made out of one heqatof corn ; loaves of different sizesand

beersof different strengths,whenthe amounts wereadjustedso as

to represent equal quantities of corn, were exchanged at par.

Theseloaveswereevidently onlyof the common sort,the staple

foodand drink : special qualities,suchas we see named frequently

at Medinet Habu and in some of the papyri, would command

specialprices.
