were half as likely to become overweight as people who ate three or
fewer times. And hence, this chapter.
Of course, when I say “snacks,” I don't mean potato chips and
onion dip. Good snacks are those that contain protein and a little bit of
fat, like turkey, cheese, peanut butter, and nuts. Both nutrients are
satiating, and they take longer to burn off, which keeps your blood sugar
levels from taking roller-coaster rides. Other good snacks are fiber-rich
foods like whole grains and foods that contain a high volume of water,
like vegetables and fruit. And then there's my personal favorite:
smoothies.
Smoothies are one of the staples of the Abs Diet for several reasons:
Nutrition: A typical yogurt-based smoothie with some fruit gives you a
wallop of protein and fiber and a ton of vitamins and minerals.
Weight loss: A study at the University of Tennessee found that men
who added three servings of yogurt a day to their diets lost 61 percent
more body fat and 81 percent more stomach fat over 12 weeks than
those who didn't eat yogurt. Another study showed that probiotic yogurt
with live active cultures can change how much fat is available for the
body to absorb by influencing stomach acids during digestion.
Taste: You want a dessert that's healthy but tastes like berries and
cream? How about one that tastes like peanut butter and chocolate? How
about a daiquiri? You can do it all with the smoothie recipes in this
chapter.
Laziness: Really. If Jimmy Buffett can master a blender, so can you.
It's as simple as tossing stuff in a bucket and pressing a button!
Try working the smoothies and snacks on the following pages into your
day and watch the weight melt off.
