YEARBOOKS AND MAGAZINES^431

FIGURE 18.11
HOW BLEEDS CAN MAKE
TWO PAGES LOOK LIKE ONE

White space also helps avoid perfectly balanced pages. Perfect bal-
ance can lead to boredom and interrupted eye movement. A moment of
indecision often occurs when a reader’s eyes are faced with equal-sized
elements. “What do I look at first?” the reader wonders. That’s one
reason a dominant photo is so important—it tells the reader where to
look first as he or she turns to a spread. White space also can help create
a more dynamic kind of balance (nonsymmetrical) as it creates areas of
unequal size.

Your Beat

  1. Collect a group of five photos and design a year-
book or magazine spread with them. You can add a
headline, story (any length you like, but somewhere
between five and 10 column inches) and captions to
complete your design. To make the assignment more
    challenging, try these two ideas.
    a. Create a layout in each of these column formats:
    2, 3, 4, 5 and 2 plus.

b. Create a layout using one of these styles:
Mondrian, isolated element, modular, “hang it
from a line” or skyline.

  1. Scan several magazines or yearbooks from other
schools, if they’re available. Identify a favorite and
a least favorite layout. Explain your reasons to your
classmates, and ask them to share their favorites
    with you.
