Game 2: Pool Play vs. Twin Bridges Lightning (MO & IL, St. Louis metro area)
Result: KC Mavs 5
Twin Bridges Lightning 2

Recap:
This game was the Mavs toughest test of the tournament season so far. This particular Twin Bridges
Lightning group was a different team from the same hockey club that faced off with the Mavs in
Nashville. After a rare scoreless 1st period, Hargadine opened the scoring for KC with a shorthanded goal
in the first minute of the 2nd period. The Lightning hung in there for a while, tying the game shortly after
KC’s first goal, and the outcome would hang in the balance going into the 3rd period, tied 1-1.

But as the Mavs would so often do, they just kept grinding on teams, wearing them down as they got
deeper in the game. KC took the lead for good with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game after
O’Bryant picked up a neutral zone turnover, rushed into the offensive zone and beat the goalie high on
the glove side. Shortly after that, a great effort by Stephenson turned into another goal by Hargadine, as
Stephenson rushed up the left side, cutting through the entire Lightning defense and eventually firing a
shot on net. The rebound trickled over to the right side for a tap in by Hargadine, putting the Mavs up 3-

  1. KC would go on to win 5-2, putting them in great position as they moved on to their third and final
    pool play game.

Game 3: Pool Play vs. Pekin Dragons (Pekin, IL)
Result: KC Mavs 6
Pekin Dragons 1

Recap:
KC got right down to business just over one minute into the game. After picking up a loose puck in his
own zone, Leath fed Wiesner with a breakout pass that he carried all the way down the right side.
Wiesner drew all the traffic, freeing up Buscher in the slot for an open look. By the time Buscher
received the pass and took the initial shot, the defense had closed in, eventually knocking Buscher to his
knees. But he kept with it, getting his stick on the rebound and eventually burying a shot from his knees,
which started the scoring for KC.

The Mavs capitalized on a power play late in the 1st period, a solid tape-to-tape pass from Dungey to
O’Bryant who put the Mavs up 2-0 as they headed into the 2nd period. O’Bryant went on to complete
the hat trick after a shorthanded goal late in the 2nd period, and the Mavs stretched their lead to 4-1 on
their way to an eventual 6-1 victory.

Stutzer remained strong, with his GAA sitting at exactly 1.00 through the first seven games, his only goal
allowed in this contest was a power play goal in the 2nd period.
