Recap:
The Mavs were excited to play their first and only tournament in their home city. As most of the
previous season involved fan restrictions, this was the first chance for many Mavs parents and extended
families to watch their team at home, and without a limit on the number of fans. The Texas Jr. Brahmas
play out of very tough Dallas area hockey league, and they came to Kansas City ready to take on the
Mavs.
The Brahmas opened the scoring in the first three minutes of the game, with an unassisted backhand
shot following a defensive zone turnover. Up to this point in the season, the Mavs rarely played from
behind, and they came back fighting after the one goal deficit. Hargadine tied the game with five
minutes remaining in the 1st period, a 5-hole shot after evading a few defenders. The 1st period ended
1-1, but that’s as close as it ever was.
2 nd period goals by Hargadine and O’Bryant stretched the lead to 4-2 after the second intermission. The
Mavs poured in five more goals in the 3rd period from Brown, Hargadine, Dungey, Wiesner, and Buscher.
The ninth and final goal was an outstanding effort by Heffernan to pinch down and keep the play alive in
the offensive zone, sending a shot on net that rebounded over to Buscher for the tap-in goal. One game
down, one win under their belt.
