Recap:
The Mavs headed to Fargo, ND, site of the Squirt International Championship, where they faced a field
of exactly 80 teams in the tournament! A long weekend of hockey was ahead of them, and they needed
a strong performance in pool play to earn a spot in the top bracket for the weekend, giving them a
chance to play for the overall championship.
The first matchup vs. Thief River Falls proved to be a mismatch, as the Mavs dominated the ice from the
first period. Opening goals by Hargadine and O’Bryant gave the Mavs an early 2-0 lead in the 1st period.
They weren’t done with the opening period scoring though. With one minute remaining in the period,
Hodgden displayed a fantastic forecheck effort, pinching down from the blue line in the offensive zone
to keep the play alive on the far boards. He slid a perfect backhand pass, tape-to-tape to Koegler in the
slot, who then fed it to Hargadine for the Mavs third goal of the period. The Mavs were moving the puck
well, on their way to a comfortable victory in game one. They added their fourth goal of the period after
a shot from Heffernan was gloved down by Brown in the slot and tucked in for a goal just before the end
of the period.
Additional goals were added by Wiesner, Brown, and Hargadine... along with a shot from the point by
Leath for the eighth goal of the game (which is always a fun celebration when a D-man gets a goal). The
