Game 5: Bracket play/Semifinal game vs. Sioux Falls Flyers (Sioux Falls, SD)
Result: KC Mavs 5
Sioux Falls Flyers 2
Recap:
The Mavs earned a spot in the championship bracket, going 4-0 in pool play, and facing the Sioux Falls
Flyers who were also 4-0. With a chance to reach the championship game on the line, the Mavs would
need to beat a team that had yet to give up a single goal in the tournament. Sioux Falls had recorded
four straight shutouts over the first two days of action on their way to the championship bracket. The
semifinal games included extra pregame ceremonies with player announcements, as well as the National
Anthem before the puck drop.
Sioux Falls was aggressive from the start, and again put the Mavs in an early hole, scoring just 90
seconds in the game, a rebound shot that was buried in the top left corner of the net. Sioux Falls
continued the pressure, adding another goal with a sharp angle shot over Stutzer’s left shoulder.
Suddenly the Mavs were backed into a corner, late in the 1st period, down 0-2, and the prospect of
playing in the championship game hanging in the balance. But the deficit didn’t last for long, as the
Mavs broke through with just over a minute remaining in the period, with Dungey scoring on a quick
shot from the faceoff circle. Shortly after that, Brown displayed some skillful moves beating the last
defender, as well as the goalie, tying the game at 2-2. KC had just recorded the first two goals against
Sioux Falls by any team during the entire tournament, and the Mavs never looked back.
Additional goals by Wiesner and Brown in the 2nd, and the Mavs took a 4-2 lead into the 3rd period. KC
had the championship game in their sights, but they needed one more strong period. The Mavs have a
history of wearing teams down over the course of the game, minimizing the opponent’s pressure as the
game wears on. And that’s exactly what happened in this semifinal. KC continued to neutralize Sioux
Falls with excellent defense, relentless backchecking by the KC forwards, and outstanding efforts
between the pipes by Stutzer. KC added an empty net goal in the last 10 seconds of the contest,
securing the 5-2 win, and sending the Mavs into the championship game.
