THE EVOLUTION OF VANESSA AMOROSI
PUFFER-JACKET PRINCESS
Circa 1999 “Have a Look”
COMEBACK
T
his isn’t Vanessa Amorosi’s
first rodeo. The singer,
born in Melbourne, is
buckling up for her third
comeback after making a
name for herself with the soft-rock
power ballads “Shine” and “Absolutely
Everybody” at the turn of the century.
In 2009, Amorosi reinvented herself
with the edgy electro-pop album
Hazardous, ditching her green
eyeshadow and turtlenecks for heavy
eyeliner, knee-high boots and arm
tattoos. Then, in 2014, she announced
she was working on a new gospel
album (yet to be released). And now,
a decade after her last solo track, she’s
back with an emotional new single
called “Heavy Lies the Head”.
Amorosi, 37, says her upcoming
album is extremely personal, boundary
pushing and more aggressive than
anything she’s done in the past. “With
‘Heavy Lies The Head’ I’m singing the
way I want to sing. I’m not dumbing
my lyrics down. I’m being brutally
honest and the sound is aggressive.”
Case in point, the lyrics, “Thought
that you could break me, even said
you loved me, but they were just
words words words.”
Where has Amorosi’s new-found
honesty come from? “This album is
Almost 20 years after her
breakout album The Power,
Vanessa Amorosi is back with
a new sound, life and hairdo
more rebellious because I feel more
stable and more earthed. I grew up
playing in bars and restaurants and
had a very crazy lifestyle when I
became successful,” says Amorosi,
who released her first single at 17,
walked the Aria’s red carpet at 18,
performed at the 2000 Olympic
Games and has sold more than two
million singles and albums combined
worldwide since then. “Now I have
normality, a family and stability.”
