It’salsoeasytocreatestripesinyourpompoms, so start with
thesetwomethods,using two yarn colours.
Fora verticalstripe:
Step 1 Tomakea pompomwitha verticalstripe,wrapcreamyarn
aroundthecentrethirdofthearm.Wrappinkyarnaroundtheleft
andrightthirdsofthearm. Wind both colour yarns in these positions
untilthearmis full.
Step 2 Repeatthiswrappingpatternontheotherarm.Tiethe
pompomwithcreamyarnknottedatthetopofthegadget.Your
pompomwillhavea vertical stripe in the centre third of the sphere.
Fora horizontalstripe:
Step 3 Fora pompomwitha horizontalstripe,wrap the pink yarn
aroundonearmuntilit’sabouttwo-thirdsfull.
Step 4 Wrapcreamyarnontopuntilthearmis full.
Step 5 Repeatthewrappingontheotherarm.Tiethepompomwith
pinkyarnknottedatthetopofthegadget.Yourpompom will have a
horizontalstripeinthecentrethirdofthesphere.
Step 6 Youcanactuallyuseeithermethodtomakea stripethatruns
inanydirection– theknotofthetiedeterminesthedirectionofthe
stripe. Move the knot on the pompom from Step2 soit sits above the
pinksectionandthestripewillrunhorizontallyaswell.With
colourfulpompoms,theknotlocationis keytotheeffect.After
movingtheknot,wethoughtthecreamtielookedoddemerging
froma pinkareasowechangedit toa pinktie– it’sbesttomatchthe
tietotheyarncolouronthe pompom where you’ve knotted it.
Forcrossedstripes:
Step 7 Onceyoucanmakea stripypompom,youcanexperiment
withthetechniquetomakewiderornarrowerstripesusingasmany
coloursasyoulike.Youcanalsoadjustthepositionofthestripesby
wrappingthemina differentplaceonthearm.Tocreatea more
complexstripepattern,trycombiningthetwostripemethodsyou
justlearnt.Startbywrappingasyouwouldtocreatea vertical
stripe,withcreaminthecentrethirdandpinkintheleftandright
third.Windbothyarncolours in these positions until the arm is
abouttwo-thirdsfull.
Step 8 Wrapcreamyarnontopuntilthearmis full.
Step 9 Repeatthiswrappingpatternontheotherarm.Finishthe
pompomasusual,tyingit withpinkyarnknottedoveroneofthe
pinksections.Trimandwash and you’ll have made a pompom with
