The blank page – or screen. For some it’s a daunting
challenge, a wall to be broken down before a project can
begin. For others, that blank page is an opportunity – a
fresh chance to be inspired, let the ideas flow and create
something new.
And if there’s a theme to pick up on as you flick through
this new edition of Computer Arts, we hope it’s the
excitement that should surround the beginning of every
new creative venture. Whether it’s the start of your latest
project, the founding of a studio, a step into the world
of freelance, or the launch of your career, the thrill of
fresh ideas coming thick and fast and the chance to make
something new are what keep us all doing what we do.
At the beginning of the month, our art editor Mark
Wynne and I were among the judges at D&AD’s New Blood
Awards in London, recognising the best and brightest
young talent in advertising. The ideas on display and
the ability of these up-and-coming designers to execute
them were truly inspiring, and I fully expect some of the
winners to become regular fixtures in the magazine in the
coming months and years.
Throughout this month’s Computer Arts, we’re
examining the nature of ideas (page 38), how to hone your
creativity (page 22), what it’s like collaborating with luxury
brands (page 60) and keeping it fresh even when you’ve
established yourself in the industry (page 74). As we head
towards the business end of 2019, hopefully we’ve curated
an issue that inspires and injects fresh impetus into your
own practice. If there’s a blank page in front of you right
now, let it fill you with excitement.
