Drugs,inFairfax,VA.“Doc Al” was adoredby
manyin the communityfor over20 years.
He closedout his careeras apharmacist
for CVS.
Allenwas an avid D.C. sportsfan, alongtime
supporterofmultiplephilanthropicorgani-
zationsincludingthe General Israel Orphans
Homefor Girls,the US HolocaustMemori-
al Museum,and PublicBroadcasting.His
favoritepastimesweretraveling,walking,
playingpoker,and sharingtimewithfamily
and friends.
Allenwassurroundedandcomfortedby
his immediatelovedonesduringhis final
daysand is now at peacewith his dearwife
Sandra. Thefamilywantsto extendagra-
ciousthankyoutothestaffandcaregivers
at RiderwoodSeniorLivingfor providinga
wonderfulenvironmentand skilled,com-
passionatecare.

alady witharash. “I neverdiagnosewhile
drinking,”hetold her.“Cometo my office
tomorrow.”

was agraduateof bothSt. Vincent’sSchool
and St. Vincent’sCollegethere.Hereceived
his M.D.from the Universityof Pennsylvania
MedicalSchool,followingwhichhe complet-
ed: his internshipin InternalMedicine(under
SeniorResidentDr.AnthonyFauci) at New
York-BellevueHospitalin NewYork City;his
residencyin dermatologyat Massachusetts
General Hospitalin Boston;and BerryPlan
serviceat the NationalInstitutesof Health.
Akeen collectorof manyfine arts,but, most
of all, of friends,hewas an enthusiasticand
generoushost.He wasamemberof the
ClinicalPathologicalSociety,the Washington
Investors,the Alibi,Ausable,ChesapeakeBay
Yacht, ChevyChase,and MetropolitanClubs.
Dr.Nigraissurvivedby his wife of morethan
fifty-oneyears,the formerJane Brawley,a
sister,SusanNigraSnyder(whostill recalls
that,whenshe was anewborn,her brother,
thenage 7, attemptedto flushher feet-first
downthe toilet),his son PeterT. (MeaghanK.
Nelan)and daughter,Jane H. Gallina(Parham
Ranjbar),and five grandchildren.

Dr.ThomasP. Nigra, who has died at the age
of 80, wasarenowneddermatologist.The
causeof deathwas heartfailure.
Thecreatorand,for 43 years,Chairman
of the Departmentof Dermatologyat the
WashingtonHospitalCenter,heconducted
pioneeringclinicalresearchon minoxidilas
atreatmentfor hair loss and on the use of
phototherapy for the treatmentof avarietyof
skin disorders,includingpsoriasis.Awinner
of that institution’sGold-HeadedCaneAward
for adoctorwhohas “demonstratedthe
higheststandardsof scientificexcellence
and integrity,” Dr.Nigramentoredhundreds
of residentsand fellowsin the residency
program he designedand initiatedin the
1980’s. He also diagnosedthe first caseof
Kaposisarcoma,oftenamanifestationof
AIDS,inthe Washingtonmetropolitanarea.
Apartfromthe hospital,he maintaineda
privatepracticeat his historichousein
Georgetown,usingthesamedetachedpro-
fessionalofficeDr.JoshuaRiley,ahighly
reputedphysicianof that era, builtand used
as aclinic and schoolfor medicalstudentsin
the nineteenthcentury.Althoughthe Wash-
ingtonPostoncedescribedDr.Nigra’sprac-
tice thereas one of “dowagersand diplo-
mats,” it includedmanypatientswhowere
unableto pay and for whomhe providedhis

nal Treaties,the massAmericansuicidein
Jonestown,developingand defendingRea-
gan’splan to defeatcommunistsupported

tainingdemocracy in Argentina,arresting
General Noriega,and restoringdemocratic
governancein Panama.Afterretiringfrom
the StateDepartment,he servedas the spe-
cial assistantto the DistrictAttorneyof the
countyof NewYork wherehe continuedto
use his skillsto help prosecuteinternational
criminalsuntil 2008.
Priorto receivinghis first assignmentas a
FSO Johnmet his wife Ann,who traveledat
his side acrossthe worldand borehim three
boys,John, Mark,and Timothy.After retiring

Johnwas proudto be the 12th generationof

of Bushnell’stolook up to and emulate.
Johnwas lovedby all who met him but most

fax, VA,surrounded byfamilymembers.
She livedawonderful,long life of 96 years,
filledwithahappymarriageof morethan
68 years,five wonderfulchildrenand one
grandson,and manyopportunitiesto travel
the worldand enjoyavarietyof interests.
Elizabethwasbornin rural Pennsylvania
and grewup in Chathamand Morristown,
NewJersey.One of her specialmemories
fromthosedayswas seeingthe Hindenburg
fly by overheadon its way to Lakehurst,NJ:
whatathrill for an 11-year-old girl!Her life
changedfor the betterin her senioryear of
highschoolwhenshe met and fell in love
withher life partner,the handsomeand
brash (her description)FrederickC. Turner.
DuringWWIIyears,Frederick joined theUS
Navyand becameafighterpilot.Elizabeth
was in nurse’strainingat the time,but mar-
riagewith Frederickbeckonedafterthe war,
and her trainingstoodher in goodstead
whileraisingfive activechildren.The Navy
determinedthe directionof theirlives,and
the coupleenjoyedlivingoverseasin En-
gland,Greeceand Italy,and at manystate-
side dutystationsas well.Elizabeththrived
in thesemanydifferentplaces,and became
instrumentalin leadershiprolesin the offi-
cers’wivesorganizationsandmentoring
youngwomenwhowerenewto Navylife.
She was the glue holdingfamilylife togeth-
er whileher husbandwas oftendeployed
as his careerprogressed.Frederickretired
fromthe Navyas aVice Admiral in 1979.
Elizabethrelishedlife and enjoyedmany
interests,includinggoldenage cinemaand
musicals,golf,cookingand reading,and was
atalentedseamstress.For many yearsshe
madestylishclothingitemsfor herselfand
her two daughtersusingher trusty 1945
Singersewingmachine,atreasuredwed-
ding gift. She still ownedit, and its modern
replacement,at her death.She and Freder-
ick werelong-timesupportersof the Ken-
nedyCenter,and lovedseeinglive theater
together.
Aboveall, Elizabethcherishedher loved
ones.She is survivedby her five children,
FrederickIII, Pamela,Robert,Davidand Su-
san; theirspouses,who lovedtheirBetty/
Mom;grandsonChristopher;sisterMarion;
and 10 niecesand nephews,who lovedtheir
AuntBetty.
