Comedian
George Lewis
reflects on the
week’s action
Due to low pay,
unsociable hours and a
lack of desire to be assaulted
by someone’s dad on a Sunday
morning, it is not uncommon
for teams of under-nines to
turn up to play a match
without an official referee.
Usually, one of the parents
will step in and officiate, which
is helpful, but not without its
problems. They are probably
not in peak physical condition
and it’s rare they have stayed
up to date with the latest
intricacies of FA protocols.
But the main issue is bias.
It’s hard to stay completely
impartial when you know a
team very well. So you will
either favour the players you
are familiar with, because,
“Yes, he headbutted that lad,
but he’s always very polite to
his mum,” or you will go too
far the other way and send off
your own son for a possible
foul throw.
This is why I’m worried
about the news that referees
may start training with
Premier League clubs from
next season. Apparently the
idea came from Ralf Rangnick,
the Manchester United interim
manager. On behalf of United
fans, can we please leave the
transformation of the entire
league until after we’ve sorted
out our own club? Cheers.
Anyway, the idea is that a
closer relationship between
players and officials will lead
to better performances
because it will help everyone
get to know and understand
one another. But I think you
need the distance for referees
to act without favour or
discrimination. To me, having
them work together day in,
day out, would be like letting
criminals work with police, or
politicians work with Sue Gray.
Do they join in as players? I
don’t think that would improve
the relationships at all. They
would be last pick for every
match and the other players
would run rings around them.
After that, the refs will be hell-
bent on getting their own back
on the boys who have been
humiliating them all week.
Therefore, I guess they will
just referee the sessions. But
training doesn’t really follow
the structure and rules of a
normal match, so they will be
blowing their whistles every
time the goalkeeping coach
picks the ball up, which will
sort of ruin the flow.
Presumably it won’t just be
referees that are invited either.
I suspect there is jealousy in
the ranks already (“He thinks
he’s so good because he’s got
that whistle”) so you’d have to
invite the assistant referees
and fourth officials along.
But what training could a
fourth official do? Lift an
electronic board up and down
thousands of times a day?
Imagine how massive their
shoulders would be. No player
would argue any decision ever
again. Maybe there is some
logic to the idea after all...
