Synoptic situation
A deep area of low pressure
over Scandinavia, in conjunction
with a weak ridge of high
pressure over the Atlantic,
will maintain a cold northerly
fl ow across the British Isles.
Numerous showers will develop
as troughs slide southwards
in the fl ow, combined with
daytime heating. Rain will
develop over the Channel
courtesy of a slider low.

H
ouseholds can claim
£5,000 grants towards
installing heat pumps,
which are also now free
of VAT (News, March
31). With home heating responsible
for about 14 per cent of the UK’s
carbon dioxide emissions, the new
grants are designed to help to wean
households off gas and oil boilers.
But heat pumps alone are not the
entire solution.
Heat pumps make hot water, but
not as hot as a gas boiler and not as
rapidly. To work efficiently, the
pumps need to heat well-insulated
buildings, quite possibly with a
ventilation system to refresh indoor
air to stop it going stale but without
losing heat. Space is needed for an
extra-large hot-water tank, and
larger radiators or underfloor
heating to make rooms adequately
warm. Simply turning up a
thermostat to get quick heat doesn’t
work because it takes time for the
system to respond to a change in
heating demands.
The government proposes to ban
gas boilers from new-build homes by
2025, making heat pumps and their
additional equipment an attractive
alternative, but for existing homes
the target year is from 2035.
The priority is good insulation,
and even draughty old houses can be
refurbished to high standards. The
Dutch Energiesprong (meaning
“energy leap”) is a concept that
installs exceptionally high-grade
insulation on existing buildings or
new-builds using prefabricated
panels, as well as using heat pumps
together with solar panels on roofs.
This whole-house approach makes
the energy needed for home
heating, hot water and even
electrical appliances — what is
called net-zero energy. Each house
refurbishment can take less than ten
days to complete. The results are
clear: in Utrecht, homes that were
retrofitted in 2019 have seen their
energy use drop by 78 per cent, with
their remaining energy needs
generated by solar panels. If this
sounds too good to be true for the
UK, Energiesprong began here in
2019 with 150 social-housing homes
in Nottingham.
