ofvaudevillianperformers,artisansandbuildersshapedLee’scharacterandapproachto
living.Weloveherbecauseshelivedthatcreativepersonalitywithpride,andneverwith
regret.
BornAugust30,1947,LoisAlethaGarrettwasafourthgenerationWashingtonianwhogrew
upasthetinysingingstaronIrvingStreet.Shewasencouragedtoshareherinherentsing-
ingtalentsfromayoungagebyhermother,Washington,DCbigbandsingerRuthYoungs
Garrett.LeeimpressedthelocalsaswellasRuth’scrowdontheUSOstageasthegirlwith
thewoman’svoice,untilherparentsmovedtoasmallhousein thecountrysidenearSugar-
loafMountainin Clarksburg,Maryland.Knownas“A letha”in highschool,shetaughtherself
toplayguitarandpiano,whilecontinuingtosingthroughoutheryouth,winningGleeClub
awardsandorganizingfriendsin unbeatableharmoniesfortheFollies.Butwasthatenough
forthisRenaissancesoul?Ofcoursenot!Leewasanevercuriousteen,andshadowedher
fatherwhileheworkedin hisshopathome.Herfatherwasracecardriverandexpertma-
chinistJohn“Reds”Garrettwhochampionedherdesiretobethefirstyoungladypermitted
in IndustrialArtsclassesatGaithersburgHighSchool,graduatingin 1965.
Leeis mostknownfortheserviceandfriendshipshesharedthroughhercarpentrybusi-
ness,ALETHA.Sheheldapassionforantiquerestorationandpatiencefortraditional
carpentrythroughoutherlife,sincethosehighschoolshopclasses.“Yeah,I’magirl,so
what!...”shewouldtellhergrand-daughterswhatshetoldthosejealousclassmates.Lee
revivedthetermwoodwrightandhonoredthemeaningsoulfully.Although,clientsmight
rememberherbetterasamodernMayeWest.Soquick-wittedwithone-linersorajokejust
toseeyoulaugh...orgroan!Leehadbuiltheridentityonwoodworking,singingandmaking
music,andmakingotherslaughwheneverpossible.
Herunconditionallovecarriesonin theheartsofhersiblings.Lee’sbrother,practicaljoker
andjuniorchampionbooger-flickerJohn“Buddy”Garrett,willrememberthosehandmade
chocolatecoveredtreatsthatLeefaithfullydeliveredforhisbirthdayeachyear.Hersister
andbestfriendforever,FritziGarrettMoyars,isstillLee’sbiggestfan.Fordecades,the
sistersperformedgenerationalfavorites-fromTheAndrewSisterstoTinaTurner-together
withtheirmotherRuthasthePeachTree-oonmostoccasions,(andalsobyspecialrequest
asthequirkybutlovableRaggityAnnAll-ClownBand.)Theirangelicharmonieswillalways
berememberedforthejoytheybroughtus.
OurmemoriesofLeeturntohersurvivingfamily.HerhusbandBobPhebusis amanoffew
wordsandasubtlesenseofhumorthatbalancedLee’spersonalityperfectly.WhileLee
readilyofferedsomanygreatstoriestotherestofus,theysharedalastingstoryalltheir
own.Theymetasteenagers,youngandfreeridingtogetherinhisTempestconvertible.
LeeheldvigilwhileheservedinVietnam.BoboftenworkeddoubletimeattheDefense
MappingAgencytoprovideforherandtheirchildren.Retiredandnowpecanfarming,Bob
willreturntoGeorgiaforplantingandharvestseasons,tosharememorieswithfamilywho
willmisshertheretoo.
Leeis survivedbythreechildrenwhocontinuetherichfamilyhistoryofentertainers,artists
andartisans.JonPhebusis ayogateacher,healingartspractitionerandlifelongmusician.
KellyPhebusis avisualartist,fineartsprofessionalandeducator.RobPhebus,isaneclectic
craftsmanandexpertcarpenterwhostoicallystayedbyhertomakeherlatelifethebest
possible.Leewasequallydevotedtoherthreegrandchildrenwhichis apparentbytheir
interests.College-boundandotherwiseflourishing,Lila,EmmaleeandGarretthaveabright
futureofchoicesaheadofthem-startinglifefullysupportedbytheir‘Lulu’fortheirapti-
tudesin singing/songwriting,fibercraftsandauto-mechanics,respectively.
Lee’screativecharactertouchedtheheartsofallshemet,youngandold.Shewillbe
missedbyallwhoknewher.ThefamilywillbehostingacelebrationoflifeinLee’shonor,
detailstofollow.
