Amphotericin B,liposomal formulation(ABLC, Abelcet)

Same indications as forconventionalamphotericin B. Liposomalformulations may be usedat higher doses, andsafety margin is increased.Expense is much higherthan for conventionalformulations.

Renal toxicity is the mostdose-limiting effect.

Higher doses can be usedcompared to conventionalformulation ofamphotericin B. Dilute in5% dextrose in water to1 mg/mL, and administerIV over 1–2 hours.

100 mg/20 mL inlipid formulation.

Dog: 2–3 mg/kg IV 3times/week for 9–12treatments to acumulative dose of24–27 mg/kg.Cat: 1 mg/kg IV 3times/week for 12treatments.

Ampicillin (Omnipen,Principen, others[human forms])

β-lactam antibiotic.Inhibits bacterial cell wallsynthesis.

Use cautiously in animalsallergic to penicillin-likedrugs.

Dose requirements varydepending onsusceptibility of bacteria.Absorbed approximately50% less, compared withamoxicillin, whenadministered orally.Generally, more frequentor higher doses neededfor gram-negativeinfections.

250, 500 mgcapsules; 125, 250,500 mg vials ofampicillin sodium.Ampicillintrihydrate: 10 and25 g vials forinjection.

Ampicillin sodium:10–20 mg/kg q6–8h IV,IM, SC or 20–40 mg/kgq8h po. Ampicillintrihydrate: Dog:10–50 mg/kg q12–24hIM, SC.Cat: 10–20 mg/kgq12–24h IM, SC.

Antacid drugs

Atipamezole(Antisedan)

α^2

-antagonist. Used to
reverse

α^2

-agonists, such

as medetomidine andxylazine.

Safe. Can cause someinitial excitement in someanimals shortly afterreversal.

When used to reversemedetomidine, injectsame volume as used formedetomidine.

5 mg/mL injection

Inject same volume asused for medetomidine.
