Lincomycin (Lincocin)

Lincosamide antibiotic,similar in mechanism toclindamycin anderythromycin. Spectrumincludes primarilygram-positive bacteria.Used for pyoderma andother soft tissueinfections.

Adverse effectsuncommon. Lincomycinhas caused vomiting anddiarrhea in animals. Donot

administer orally to
rodents and rabbits.

Action of lincomycin andclindamycin is similarenough that clindamycincan be substituted forlincomycin.

100, 200, 500 mgtablets.

15–25 mg/kg q12h po.For pyoderma, doses aslow as 10 mg/kg q12hhave been used.

Linezolid (Zyvox)

Oxazolidinone antibiotic.Gram-positive spectrumthat includesdrug-resistant strains ofEnterococcus

expense limits routine use.

Adverse effects includediarrhea and nausea.Rarely in people, anemiaand leukopenia have beenobserved. Use cautiouslywith monoamine oxidaseinhibitors andserotonergic drugs.

Use in animals is reservedfor only drug-resistantinfections (e.g., MRSA) forwhich other drugs areineffective.
