Triamcinolone andTriamcinoloneacetonide (Vetalog,Triamtabs, Aristocort,generic)

Glucocorticoidantiinflammatory drug.Triamcinolone has potencythat is approximately equalto methylprednisolone(about 5

prednisolone),

although somedermatologists suggest thatpotency is higher. Injectablesuspension is slowlyabsorbed from IM orintralesional injection site.Used for intralesionaltherapy.

Adverse effects are similarto other corticosteroids.When used for ocularinjections, there is someconcern that granulomasmay occur at injectionsite.

Note that cats may requirehigher doses than dogs(sometimes 2

Veterinary (Vetalog)0.5 and 1.5 mgtablets; 2 or6 mg/mL suspensioninjection. Humanform:1,2,4,8,16 mg tablets;10 mg/mL injection.

Antiinflammatory:0.5–1 mg/kg q12–24h po,then taper dose to0.5–1 mg/kg q48h po.(However, manufacturerrecommends doses of0.11–0.22 mg/kg/day.)Triamcinolone acetonideinjection: 0.1–0.2 mg/kgIM, SC, repeat in 7–10days. Intralesional:1.2–1.8 mg, or 1 mg forevery cm diameter oftumor every 2 weeks.

Trilostane (Vetoryl)

Used for treatment ofhypercortisolemia(Cushing’s syndrome) indogs. 3-

β- hydroxysteroid

dehydrogenase inhibitor, indogs, for treatment ofpituitary-dependenthyperadrenocorticism(PDH).

In one study, adverseeffects consisted of 1 dogwith transient lethargyand 1 dog with anorexia.Otherwise, it has beenwell tolerated. One shouldcheck electrolyte levels intreated patients becausetrilostane decreasesaldosterone.

Trilostane is an efficaciousand safe medication fortreatment of dogs withPDH. It is registered inEurope for treatment ofPDH but is notcommercially available atthis time in the US. It hasbeen imported byveterinarians afterobtaining permission fromthe Food and DrugAdministration. Doseshould be adjusted inindividual patients basedon cortisol measurements.
