Sundasciurus moellendorffi

description: The ventral surface is cream colored. The tail
is darker than the back, with more black hairs. The color of
the head and upperparts is uniform. This description is
based on the two specimens in the Smithsonian Institu-
tion’s National Museum of Natural History. On one speci-
men the dorsal surface is light brown grizzled with white
and darker brown, and there are white patches on the upper
back. On the other specimen the dorsal surface is light
brown russet grizzled with white, with the russet color
strongest on the midline.
size: Female—HB 200.0 mm; T 190.0 mm; Mass 190.0 g.
Male—T 218.0 mm.
Sex not stated—HB 207.0 mm; T 190.0 mm.
distribution: S. moellendorffi occurs on the Calamian Is-
lands (Philippines), except for Busuanga Island.

conservation: IUCN status—near threatened. Population
trend—decreasing.
habitat: This species is found in primary and secondary
lowland forests and coconut groves.

description: S. philippinensis is brown on the back. It has a
reddish eye ring, a gray to dull orange brown venter, and an
annulated tail.
size: Female—HB 193.7 mm; T 192.1 mm.
Male—HB 193.0 mm; T 172.0 mm.
Sex not stated—HB 191.7 mm; T 219.0 mm; Mass 244.0 g.
distribution: This species is found in the Philippines,
from the islands of Samar south through Bohol to Basilan,
including Min da nao.
