2DARTIST MAGAZINE | ISSUE 129``````73I add a very faint teal to the image, to unify thecolors. This enhances the feeling of the scenebeing underwater, and gives a cold, murky lookto the colors already picked. Don’t forget tocontinue checking your values; placing a blacklayer above your image and setting it to colorwill allow you to see the values accurately.08Grungy texture and details: As thescene is underwater, there shouldbe a lot of grime floating around making thewater slightly translucent. Take a grungy texture(I use one that I make by scanning paper),and place it on a layer above the painting.Try out a few different layer modes, and makesure to keep it subtle. Here I use the Differencelayer blend mode, and set the opacity toaround five- or ten-percent. This should givethe water a dense, grungy appearance. In addition to the grime, use a textured, scattered brush to gently suggest at bubblescoming from the diver’s equipment. Use thesame brush to paint faint bubbles aroundthe serpent, to show that it is moving.Adding color using layer blend modes allows you to keep your black andwhite values``````Balance your colors and remember to check your painting’s black andwhite values``````Make sure to only hint at details, less is definitely more in speed paintings like this
