Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Thrid Edition: Model and Guidelines

(vip2019) #1
11 Lessons from Practice: Using the JHNEBP Tools 257

  1. Complete the following activities to ensure successful translation:

✘ Secure a project leader.
✘ Consider whether translation activities require different or
additional members.
✘ Identify critical milestones and related tasks.

✘ Identify change champions.
✘ Schedule time to complete
milestones.
✘ Identify any observable pre- or post-
measures.

  1. Identify barriers to the success of the change, and then identify strengths that can be leveraged to
    overcome barriers.

Barriers Resources or Strengths

Plan to Overcome Barriers
by Leveraging Strengths as
Appropriate
Need approval for implementing
project in single med/surg unit as
a pilot

Team members from CAUTI workgroup
and pilot unit know the approval process
for their department and different
disciplines

Team members who know
the process will submit
protocol for approval

Education of large number nurses
and technicians

Nurse educators and nurse leaders on
pilot unit

Allow educators time to
develop an education plan
and implement
Equipment available Supply coordinator for each unit Supply coordinator to
ensure adequate supply of
wipes and remove basins

  1. Consider whether or how this change will affect the following:

✘ Electronic health record ❑ Workflow ❑ Policies and/or
procedures

  1. Confirm support and/or availability of funds to cover expenses. (Check all that apply.)

❑ Personnel costs
✘ Supplies/equipment
❑ Technology
✘ Photocopying

✘ Education or further training
❑ Content or external experts
✘ Dissemination costs (conference costs, travel)
❑ Other: __________________________

Identifying potential barriers and resources prior to
implementation allows the team to take a proactive approach
and take time to develop plans to overcome those barriers. It
is helpful to match a resource or strength with every barrier
(of course, you can have more than one strength for each
barrier, too).

Often, translation requires different
team members than those who worked
on the EBP project. It is not uncommon
for members to be added at this stage.
