Chapter 17 Diagnosis of and Treatment Options for Disorders of the Spine 451
By encouraging new connections and retrain
ing lost motions, the plasticity of the canine spi
nal cord is likely to outperform any recovery
expected in humans. It behooves us to look into
this rich literature. Getting spinal‐transected
animals to walk on a treadmill works best
under a series of prescribed circumstances and
these are most definitely considerations that
should bear fruit for us working with the spine
and its functions in the canine athlete.
