HOW OLD IS MY HOME?
Victorian-era homes were built between
1840 and 1900, and often feature
cast-iron lacework verandahs, arched
and double-hung timber windows, and
slate or corrugated iron roofs.
Federation homes, also known
as Queen Anne houses, were built
between 1890 and 1915 and tend to
be asymmetrical in design, with
multi-faceted roofs and intricate
verandahs integrated into the roofs,
as well as soaring ceilings with
decorative plasterwork.
Edwardian houses, built in the
immediate years from 1910, commonly
featured red brick or weatherboard
exteriors with embellished fretwork
timber detail, leadlight windows and
steeply pitched roofs.
he Californian bungalow era was
from 1920 to 1930 and highlighted
lower-pitched roofs, while featuring
large columns under the verandahs,
stained ply wood interior walls and
double-hung leadlight windows.
Key characteristics of the striking
Art Deco home era of 1930 to 1950 were
rounded corners, terracotta tiles and the
prominent use of whites and creams.
Mid-century modern homes from the
1950s and 1960s displayed lat roofs and
open-plan rooms, as well as extensive
glazing across their entire facades. ▶
KNOW YOUR HOME
Before you embark on a renovation, take
time to do your research and ascertain
your home’s original era. he last thing
you want to do is mix architectural
periods, leading to a confusing
mishmash of house styles.
‘Try to be empathic to the bones of
the building,’ says Melbourne interior
designer Jasmine McClelland, of
Jasmine McClelland Design.
‘Consider what is already there and
be careful not to destroy or change
everything. Keep the original features
of the era wherever possible, as these
are all irreplaceable and come with such
history. he craftsmanship that went
into these homes was often incredible.’
