OPEN-PLAN LIVING
his was your typical closed-up living
space at the rear of the property. A wall
and doorway separated the original
dining room from the L-shaped living
area that spanned from the back to the
front of the solid-brick home. Part of
my master plan was to reclaim some of
the old living space for a new bedroom.
he layout allowed me to easily
remove the wall separating the lounge
and dining area to create a light-illed
entertaining space that spilled out
onto the rear deck via new bifold doors.
At the front, I closed up the arched
entrance and walled in part of the
room to insert a new bedroom, which
neatly squared of the living area.
Lighting and furnishings are really
important in open-plan design as
a way to deine the space. I placed
feature pendant lights over the dining
table and sitting area, and then general
recessed downlights for the whole
open-plan space.
he walls are a combination of
soothing Taubmans Penguin March
around the bifolds and punchy
geometric-lined wallpaper. A textured
rug helped deine the TV and lounge
area, its neutral tones blending in with
the deep sofa. Cushions provided the
colour highlights.
Although it was a large space, the
furnishings and lighting created distinct
areas within the open plan, which is the
triumph of interior design and styling. ▶
Patterned wallpaper adds
depth and contrasts with
the choice of artworks.
