Abstract
Writing skills are one of the basic skills in the Malay language that students need to master.
The purpose of this study was to increase the mastery of third year students in the skills of
constructing single sentences by using the SPBTS technique. The SPBTS technique is an
acronym that refers to who, act, how, place, and reason. All of these elements are used to help
students to construct single sentences easily. Six third year students from a National School
were recruited as study participants in this study. All these students have different life
backgrounds and have mastered the 3M skills of reading, writing and counting. Researchers
have taken the model of Kemmis and McTaggart (1983) to be applied in this study. The model
is one of the models often used in action research where it has introduced four steps of the
cycle namely planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The method of collection and analysis
used by the researcher is through quantitative and qualitative approaches. Both of these
approaches were implemented with observation through checklists, document analysis and
interviews. Researchers used quantitative and qualitative approaches through observations,
training reviews and interviews. The findings of the study clearly show that the skills of
constructing single sentences for the study participants have improved through the data
analysis performed. In conclusion, the SPBTS technique applied can improve the skills of
constructing single sentences among third year students.
