Seventeen-year-old Thomas Finch-Jones of Birmingham
took three fi sh, including this 24lb mirror (above), during a
four-day visit to the Carp Society’s Horseshoe Lake in
Gloucestershire. Thomas, whose other fi sh weighed 25½lb
and 23½lb, fi shed to a gravel bar at 70 yards, where he
presented Xcel Baits VNF hookbaits on blow-back rigs
amongst a bed of 12mm, 14mm and 16mm freebies. End
tackle comprised 20lb Korda N-Trap Soft links, size 6
Choddy B hooks and 4oz Fox leads. Chub Outkast 50 Plus
rods, Windcast Z reels and 18lb ESP Syncro XT were used
amongst his set-up.
Professional footballer Ryan Lloyd of
Biddulph got back amongst the fi sh on his
local park lake during a short day session,
bagging this 27lb mirror known as the
Park Lake Big Girl amongst a four-fi sh
catch. The 21-year-old fi shed to a
prebaited silty area at 10 yards, offering
14mm Sticky Yellow Signature pop-ups
on hinged stiff presentations incorporating
25lb Korda Mouthtrap and N-Trap
Semi-Stiff links, size 6 Choddy Krank
hooks and 3oz pear leads. Set-up wise,
he used 13ft Fox Horizon XT rods,
Shimano Ultegra 5500 reels and 15lb
ESP Syncro XT Loaded main line.
This 22¼lb common was one of two
twenties banked by Craig Startin of
Walsall during an eight-hour session on a
private venue. The 38-year-old, who also
had a 24lb common, offered Brace Mix
Liquorice Cream hookbaits in snowman
presentations at 40 yards. Rigs
incorporated Semi-Stiff links, size 4
Vardis Gripper hooks and 3oz pear leads.
Jason Massay, a 44-year-old from
Rumney, Cardiff, topped a two-fi sh catch
on White Springs Fishery with this 21lb
mirror. Jason, who was on a 48-hour
social session, fi shed with Red Ball
hookbaits next to an island, offering
hookbaits amongst two kilos of freebies.
His rigs were tied up from Gardner links,
Nash Fang Twister hooks and inline
leads.
An eight-hour stint on a Staffordshire club
water threw up this 20¼lb mirror and a
14-pounder to Martin Wilson of
Uttoxeter. The fi sh took a prototype
hookbait from Burton Bait Rollers fi shed
over blanket weed at 60 yards amongst a
100-bait spread. End tackle comprised
20lb ESP links, Stiff Rigger hooks and
1½oz pear leads.
with a fi sh from the Lower Lake
weighing a few ounces under 20lb.
I had to include it as it’s a right
stunner! These stockies were put in
a few years ago to preserve the
future of the lakes, and judging by
this fi sh, the future’s looking bright.

Not so bad
Darren Fidler laughed in the face of Friday 13th
superstitions by banking three fi sh to 29lb 14oz (below)
during a day session on a private syndicate water. The
43-year-old from Melksham, Wiltshire, had to endure
pouring rain during his stay, but found success by
offering Urban Bait Nutcracker pop-ups on choddies
amongst half a kilo of freebies at 35 yards.
A day session on Weston Lawns Fishery in
Bedworth, Warwickshire, produced this 27lb 7oz
mirror (right) for 32-year-old bus driver Karl Holmes of
Leicester. He told Carp-Talk: “In a real touch of class,
Weston Lawns Fishery has let me name this fi sh Malc
after my father, who suddenly passed away a couple of
hours after I landed this stunning mirror. This will always be
a special catch for me.” Karl tempted this fi sh on a Mainline
bottom bait amongst a scattering of freebies at 15 yards.
Rigs comprised 15lb Korda N-Trap links, size 6 Kurv
Shank links and 3oz inline leads. He also used 3½lb
Sonik Sk4 rods, Crosscast X reels and 15lb
Touchdown main line.
