Gill Thermogrid

mid layer range
I tested two of the items in Gill’s new
mid layer range: the zip-neck long-
sleeve top and leggings, made from
four-way stretch Thermogrid fabric for
‘extreme stretch and warmth’.
The fabric’s interior grid-construction
is said to enhance compressibility,
airfl ow and dry time, while the outer
layer is smooth for improved layering.
The slim-fi t designs are true to size,
very soft and comfortable. They wash
well and still look brand new a year
later. Details include a soft fabric cover
at the top of the zip to avoid chin chafe
and thumb holes in the sleeves to keep
hands warm. Available in ash grey with
red details, other items in the range
include a jacket and gilet.
The leggings are priced at £45, the zip
neck jumper at £59.

5in and 7in models

The XF520 and XF608 Marine GPS
Chartplotters have 5in and 7in displays
respectively. These have a colour
screen, can also display NMEA0183
data, and are waterproof to IP65. They
cost £450 and £635 respectively.

Marine Diesel Basics

This book is said to
be the fi rst visual
guide to marine
diesel systems.
Author Dennison
Berwick promises to

boaters need to
know to maintain
their diesel system,
winterise, protect
from heat and
humidity, and recommission for trouble-
free running. Features include more than
300 drawings; 64 maintenance tasks; 66
lay-up tasks; 53 recommissioning tasks. It
covers sailboats, motorboats and
narrowboats; indirect and direct cooled
diesel engines, as well as saildrives.
Published in paperback and ebook
formats, by Voyage Press, Toronto. Priced

Pots and pans take up an inordinate
amount of room on board. These Tefal
Ingenio pans have a detachable
handle which Tefal says makes them
take up 40% less room than regular
pots and pans. The pans also come
with plastic lids for storage of leftovers.
We tried some. The stainless steel milk
and saucepans pans fi t inside the
non-stick frying pan, and a clever

clamp handle fi ts all of them in turn.
The plastic lids work well and are a
secure way to stop spillages when the
pans are cold. They’re pricey but are
excellent quality and take up much
less space on board than regular
crockery. The glass lids fi t well and
have rubberised edges – again good
for a small boat.

Verdict

These are thermals that
don’t look like thermals.
They are really
comfortable, breathable
and easy to layer, or to wear
on their own as a tracksuit.
On a ski trip I wore these
in minus 8°C with just a
T-shirt under my ski
jacket and felt fi ne.
The stretchy
bottoms were
great for loafi ng
around in at the
chalet after. The
Thermogrid mid layers dry
quickly, they look good (i.e.
not like traditional thermals)
and are a great fi t. Highly
recommended.
