TROUBLED WATERS
In your October issue, Keith Wheeler made
a very valid point with respect to railway
bridges in the Norfolk Broads becoming
stuck shut in the summer months.
For many years, my husband and I used
to cruise our Powles from York to the South
Broads during July. In the late ’80s and
early ’90s, the bridges at both Reedham
and Somerleyton worked reliably with a
blackboard giving notice of opening times.
Now that we’ve moved down to Norfolk
for our retirement with our Princess 385
kept at Brundall Gardens Marina, we are
finding our cruising is regularly being
curtailed by the problem bridges.
I spoke to a late friend of ours who’s
family have been Broads folk for over 400
years who told me that there used to be
two sets of rails for each bridge for winter
and summer. Those for summer use were
a little shorter to allow for expansion but
in recent times, this practice had stopped.
Given that the Broads Authority use
our toll money to dredge and undertake
navigation works, one would think that
they would take a proactive stand with
Network Rail. Unless Network Rail spends
the necessary money on updating these
bridges, the beautiful Broads will be lost
to the next generation. Sarah Phillips

Judging from the number of
letters we have received on this
matter, I fear we may have opened
a can of worms. I can only empathise
with the affected boat owners and keep
the pressure on the Broads Authority
and Network Rail to find a permanent
solution. Hugo
