Saltwater Boat Angling — December 2017

(Barry) #1

Saltwater Boat Angling 23

Fast start
And thus, to this year’s event; the first thing we did was
drift on the famous Shambles Bank (featured a few issues
back) where Andy Collings immediately got on the score
sheet by landing a small blonde ray. This was immediately
followed by a much bigger specimen in the form of an 8Ib
3oz small eyed ray caught by the oldest competitor,
73-year-old John Ward.

A tug from a blonde!
Next up, Ian Youngs had a tug on his tackle from a blonde
(he should be so lucky at his age). It was a ray of course
and it turned out to be a lovely 16 pounder. All of these
rays were tempted by strips of mackerel on 4/0 Sakuma
Stingers using a long flowing trace and all were returned
alive.
We then moved south, away from the Shambles Bank, and
anchored on a reef which produced a variety of fish;
including black bream, red gurnard, conger, undulate rays
and the ubiquitous lesser spotted dogfish. Then as the
tide changed, and strengthened, it was time to move
again as the ‘old gits’ were not keen to fish with big
weights.

Anchored up
We then had a session anchored on a reef to the east of
Portland. The competitors used a combination of baits
and several bull huss and congers were boated during our
time there as well as more black bream and a couple of
cod - Jim Stone (pictured) pulled up the best cod;
weighing 10Ib 2oz.
During what was a very enjoyable day in reasonable
weather we reminisced, as you do, about all sorts of
things; music, sweets we used to eat as kids, our lost

youth, TV programmes and of course the fishing from
by-gone years. It’s always better back then.....
As always, and all to soon, it was time to call lines up and
head back to Weymouth.
The competition was pretty fierce but good natured and
there weren’t a lot points between the top three.

So, the winner, and “Old Git of 2017”, was Andy Collings
winning the shield for the second time. Runner Up was
Jim Stone who was fishing for the first time in this
competition.

2017 Results – Andy Collings 169 points, Jim Stone 160
points, Ian Youngs 154 points, Robin Amor 135 points,
Bill Oliver 98 points, John Ward 88 points, Graham
Rosamond 86, Denise Youngs 32 points.
We all had a lot of fun, caught a lot of fish and put the
world to rights; and how enjoyable it was too.

The date for the next “Old Gits” competition is
September 12th 2018.
