This conser vation centre hopes to create a
good home for abused sun bears, as these
honey-loving animals are often caught and
locked up in cages so people can sell their
bile (a digestive fluid made in the bear’s
liver) as an ingredient in traditional Chinese
medicine. The bears’ stomachs are cut
open to remove the bile, causing them
terrible pain. At this sanctuar y, rescued
bears get medical treatment, and live
safely inside a large forest enclosure that
mimics their natural habitat.

In Thailand, elephants are often abused:
They are made to give rides to tourists,
per form tricks for money, or carr y heavy
loads. They may also be chained up and
not given enough food to eat. The people
at the Elephant Nature Park rescue these
gentle giants and let them roam free, play
and live as herds, where they can bond
with each other.

INSTEAD OF THE ZOO, HOW
ABOUT VISITING AN ANIMAL
SANCTUARY? THESE PLACES
RESCUE ENDANGERED
ANIMALS AND RELEASE
THEM BACK INTO THE WILD.
BY VISITING, YOU’LL BE
SUPPORTING THE PEOPLE
WHO HELP SAVE ANIMALS
FROM CRUEL TREATMENT.
