THE KOMODO

DRAGON

While the scener y is

the island, the reason
why Komodo National
Park is world famous is
because it is home to the
Komodo dragon!

It is said that in the early 1900s, Dutch
sailors around Indonesia heard stories
of an island filled with huge fire-breathing
dragons. Word of these ferocious creatures
got around, and a Dutchman, Lieutenant
van Steyn van Hensbroek, decided
to investigate.
Upon finding the creatures, he realised
that the rumours of fire-breathing dragons
were exaggerated, but they were cer tainly
still the biggest lizards he had ever seen.
The Komodo dragon is actually a type
of monitor lizard that can grow up to three
metres long! It is named after the island, as
the reptile does not exist anywhere else in
the world. There are about 5,700 Komodo
dragons in the nature park, and while they
can be ferocious, they do not normally
attack people.

PINK BEACH AND BLUE SKY IN
KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
Indonesia

Pantai Merah:
The Pink Beach
Yes! You read that correctly. There are only
a handful of pink beaches in the world, and
they get their unique colour from corals. Over
thousands of years, waves cause tiny pieces of
red coral from the sea to combine with the
white sand of the beach. As the two mix,
the sand along the coastline becomes
a soft pink colour.
