From studio pottery to the genius of Matisse you’ll be

Entitled Wader this 1963 oil on canvas shows a woman striding into a lake or swimming pool.

Often described as the American Matisse Milton Avery was born in New York to a working-

class family. His radical abstract paintings focus on bold colours and unusual explorations of

shape which set him apart from his contemporaries. In Milton Avery an exhibition running

until the end of this month London’s Victoria Miro gallery celebrates the artist’s life and

legacy while exploring his creatively colourful landscapes gures and still lifes.
