STRIKE GOLD
Estimate: £1000–£1500
The seductive Asian antiques market has been thriving over recent months and this extraordinary
gilt-decorated powder blue bottle vase did not disappoint when it came to auction earlier this
year. With close to 500 people registering to bid at Sworders’ Asian Art sale in May this elegant
piece was one of several to trounce estimates. Sitting at 10 inches high with a small amount of
damage to the rim the vase was crafted during the rule of the Jiaqing Emperor between 1796
and 1820 and is lavishly decorated with golden lotus and shou symbols which represent purity
and immortality. After a erce competition between bidders online and those in the Stansted
Mounttchet salesroom the vase was pushed far beyond its humble low estimate.
