Tone opted for a soft colour palette in the main
house giving the space a sense of calm. The floors are
white with a touch of grey and most of the walls and
ceilings are painted a fresh white. âThis is typically
Scandinavianâ she says. âItâs because we have such dark
winters but still want a cosy light interior.â However
Tone has peppered her home with darker tones too. You
see this in the bathroomâs deep grey accent wall (see page
- as well as in the rugs pillows and paintings. âI love
washed-out earthy huesâ she says. âMy favourite accent
colour is a deep dark blue.â
The understated colour palette is
the perfect backdrop for the furniture
and accessories Tone has gathered
from her trips. âI travel a lot and buy
anything I think is beautifulâ she
enthuses. âI like to discover unique
pieces that no one else has.â The travel
is mostly to garner inspiration for her
work as an interior stylist. âI never
visit interiors stores when Iâm away.
Iâm mostly looking at architecture
people and unusual colour and
pattern combinationsâ she explains.
You see an example of this in the
master bedroom (page 84) which
Tone has decorated with an eclectic
array of furniture including an Indian
cabinet an antique Italian chair and a
Norwegian side table. All these pieces
coalesce in a beautiful creative way.
Similarly the main sitting room
features a white linen Italian sofa
two vintage âTulipâ chairs and a worn
rug from a trip to Istanbul. âI love
old rugs â the structure the look the
history. Rugs are very important because they ground
the room and can be used to create zonesâ she says.
Tone loves to visit flea markets and often returns
to places such as Marrakesh and Beijing just for their
wonderful markets. âI think Iâve been to Marrakesh and
Beijing more than 20 timesâ she says. This explains
the abundance of clay vases and Buddhas arranged on
shelves window sills and ledges around the house.
âI find Buddhas so peaceful. I buy them from a huge
flea market in Beijingâ she explains. In her quest for

RIGHT Sentimental items in the hallway include a
portrait by Toneâs daughter Emma and a mirror from
her brother. A Panton âQuickshipâ chair adds a modern
touch and a surprising contrast to the mirrored table
FACING PAGE A large dining table with sculpted legs
and a linen Gervasoni âGhostâ chair create an interesting
mix of textures and shapes in the all-white dining area.
Floor-to-ceiling shelves built by a local carpenter are
crammed with treasures including a series of porcelain
vases from a Chinese ea market and a collection of
coffee table books: âI love interior and photography
books â many were presents from friendsâ says Tone
