one-o pieces Tone also taps into her huge network
of friends in and around Oslo including buyers and
store owners who trawl far-flung places such as Bali
and Africa. âIâm always asking them what they have.
Often Iâll take the pieces no one else wants. Iâll do
anything to avoid buying something completely new.â
Tone has such an aversion to new items that she
actively ages her pieces. âI liked the shape of the
mirror over the fireplace so I put it in the garden for
two years. It was under the snow â thatâs why itâs
so beautifulâ she laughs. You can clearly see Toneâs
desire to surround herself with beautiful items that
tell stories. âI like things to have historyâ she explains.
âIn the house everything seems to come together in
harmony because I love each piece.â That harmony
and that love pervade every inch of her home. Q
LEFT Toneâs bedroom contains an eclectic mix
of items including a glass cabinet from India
an Italian antique chair and a French-style side
table as well as smaller decorative details
such as a porcelain vase bought at a ea market
in China. A linen sheet is used to separate the
room from the landing BELOW An accent wall
in rough dark chalk paint provides a dramatic
backdrop for a French iron bathtub acquired
from friends. Tone uses it every day in the winter.
âIt looks the same as when I bought it â old
rustic and destroyedâ she says with affection. A
primitive stool and bust bought from a Swedish
collector add to the relaxed rustic feel of the
space while coral found on a beach in Greece
serves as a reminder of the coastal location
