Lopburi Monkey
Banquet
Lopburi, Thailand
Picture thousands of
mischievous macaques
causing a massive food
fight. The local people
of Lopburi lay out a feast
for the monkeys, owing
to the belief that doing
so will bring good luck
and prosperity their way.
The honouring of these
primates goes back to the
legend of the monkey deity
Hanuman, who rescued
Sita, the wife of Lord Ram,
from a demon.

Unduvap Full
Moon Poya Day
Sri Lanka
Unduvap Full Moon Poya
commemorates the arrival
of Sangamitta Theri in Sri
Lanka with a Bo sapling
from the sacred Jaya Sri
Maha Bodhi in India. This
visitation of Sangamitta
Theri was to pass on
knowledge of crafts,
medicine and agriculture
to the people. Pilgrims and
visitors climb to the summit
of Sri Pada to see the
sacred Bo tree and observe
the five precepts.

Kazakhstan
Independence Day
Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan Independence
Day is not only a
nationalistic celebration,
but also serves to
remember those who
died in the protests when
the First Secretary of the
Kazakhs SSR Communist
Party was replaced.
Festivities take place at
the presidential palace,
and many Kazakhs dress in
traditional clothes. Kurts
are made and other local
delicacies are served.

Dongzhi Festival
East Asia
Known as the Winter
Solstice Festival, Chinese
people believe that the
negative Yin will be
gradually overcome by
the positive Yang. This
achievement of harmony
is celebrated by eating
dumplings – tangyuan –
which symbolise reunion.
These balls of glutinous
rice are often brightly
coloured, and also serve
to remind celebrators
to behave better in the
new year! AGP
