4.2.6 Status and Change of Research Production Efficiency

by University Location

Similar with the inequality of social and economic development in China for a long

time, there are also profound gaps on the university research productions among

different regions (see Chap. 3 for the comparative analysis on the research inputs

and output of 211Us located in different regions).

There are a lot of top universities gathered in eastern China, with heavier

research funds, talented scientists, high-level research platforms, thereby the

research innovation ability of eastern 211Us is better than that of central or western

211Us, and the quantity and quality of research outputs of eastern 211Us is better

than that of central or western 211Us. Contrarily, there are only a few top uni-

versities in central and western China, facing limited growth of research resources
and threatened by“brain drain”, which results into fewer research outcomes, and

even much fewer high-quality research outcomes. Besides, as a result of factors like

history, tradition and social and economic develop level, inside eastern China, most

top universities are located in areas like Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, etc.

Therefore, we divide the full sample into eastern, central and western, and further

subdivide eastern 211Us into three groups, JUs, HSZUs, and OUs, namely uni-

versities located in the Jing-Jin-Ji regions (or JJJ regions), universities located in

Hu-Su-Zhe regions (or HSZ regions), and universities located in other regions (or

Other regions), to further examine the gaps inside the eastern 211Us.

4.2.7 NEAM Disciplines...............................

Based on the full sample results of NEAM disciplines in previous sections, we

aggregate the data by university location, and compare the differences of NEAM

research production efficiency between eastern, central and western 211Us.
