influencing factors of research efficiency, it’s required to rule out those indicators

being used in thefirst stage DEA computations like number of teaching & research

Staff. Second, when using panel data to examine the influencing factors of uni-

versity research efficiency in 2006–2010, the long duration of time period would

lead to the missing values on some indicators, thus we have to rule out those

indicators which cannot cover the whole period. Third, in the computation of DEA

efficiency scores, we run the models for NEAM and HSS samples separately, thus

theoretically it would be better if we use separate indicator systems at the second

stage. However, some environmental factors are equal to NEAM and HSS disci-

plines, plus the difficulty of distinguishing the data of sectoral and institutional

factors and internal factors, we have no choice but to apply the same indicator

system to both NEAM and HSS. Thefinally selected indicators are presented in

Table6.2.

6.2.1.3 Descriptive Statistics of Explanatory Variables

Table6.3presents the distribution of 211Us. In thefirst stage of econometric

analysis, we need to estimate the DEA efficiency scores of NEAM and HSS dis-

ciplines separately. As we mentioned in previous chapters, the NEAM sample and
HSS sample are slightly different. We have 100 cases in the NEAM sample and 105

cases in the HSS sample.

Table6.4 presents the annually average of each indicator concerning the

influencing factors of 211Us research efficiency, as well as research efficiency

score, in each year of 2006–2010.

First, we analyze the annually average of efficiency score. To NEAM disciplines,

the annually average of efficiency scores are all around 0.8 over the period, without
