To NEAM disciplines of 211Us, their growth rate of publishing on the SCI and
EI is very steady, which means that 211Us highly emphasize the research quality
along with the research quantity.
211Us also make great progresses in the aspects of Monographs and Intellectual
Properties. The numbers of Monographs in both NEAM and HSS samples are in the
overall uptrend, highlighting the great achievements of 211Us in basic researches.
The indicator of Patents also grows substantially during thefive-year period,
reflecting that the innovation capacities of universities are becoming stronger and
the capacities for universities to transfer research knowledge are also becoming
stronger.
7.1.2.2 Research Output of 211Us by University Type and Location
By classifying 211Us into 985Us and non-985Us, it’s easy tofind that 985Us
outperform non-985Us in most indicators. In the classification by location, the
output indicators of 211Us located in most regions are on a steadily growing path,
except the CSCD indicator of NEAM disciplines of the eastern 211Us. Inside
eastern 211Us, HSZUs outperform JUs and OUs in all the NEAM indicators except
Monographs. Concerning output indicators of HSS disciplines, JUs and HSZUs
outperform OUs all along.
7.1.2.3 Research Output Per Unit Input of 211Us
Given the steady growths of research inputs and outputs, the per unit research
outputs of 211Us are not in the consistent uptrends. Merely 3 out of 6 indicators
(per capita SCI of NEAM disciplines, per capita SSCI and per unit SSCI of HSS
disciplines) are increasing year by year, other indicators all decline more or less.
This may be associated to quality orientation in Chinese research universities
recently. Given the increasing amount of research funds, the per unit publications in
international high-level journals are growing simultaneously, while the per unit
publications in domestic journals go on the other way. Of course, we should notice
that even the research orientation is under change, the output lag of high-level
research production still exists, and their growth rates would appear after a rela-
tively longer time.
By classifying 211Us into 985Us and non-985Us, wefind that 985Us don’t take
absolute advantage of non-985Us in most per unit output indicators, while the
non-985Us even outperform 985Us in some indicators like per capita Monographs,
per unit Monographs in the HSS sample.
Concerning university locations, in the NEAM sample, the indicator of per
capita SCI increases in most groups, while the indicator of per unit SCI decreases in
most groups with minorfluctuations. The indicator of TOPESI is more unstable and
fluctuant in most groups. In the HSS sample, the indicator of per unit SSCI
