Chapter 3
Overall Research Performance of 211Us:
An Input-Output Perspective
Research output is an important aspect to evaluate effectiveness of research
investment. Following the fast-speed growth of research investment in Chinese
universities, the status of inputs and outputs, as well as the associations between
inputs and outputs, are received much more attention. In this chapter, we will
represent the overall research production status of 211Us from the perspective of
input and output, and uncover and discuss the underlying logics. Meanwhile, the
descriptive statistics analysis in this chapter is also a basic for the following
chapters.
The structure of this chapter is organized as follows: Thefirst section is a brief
introduction to the sample, the indicator system, and the data sources, etc. The
second section is to analyze and compare the research input state and change of
211Us. The third section is to analyze and compare the research output state and
change of 211Us. The forth part is some conclusions, to summarize thefindings and
make some discussions and comments.
3.1 Brief Introduction
3.1.1 Research Sample
As mentioned in research design section of the previous chapter, there exist dif-
ferences in the aspects such as production properties and internal logics in
“input-output”research activities of different disciplines. In order to obtain more
accuratefindings, it’s better to conduct research on the issue of university research
production on the basis of disciplinary category. Given the limitations on data
availability, it’s extremely difficult to do the research on each specific discipline. In
this chapter, we will try to roughly divide all the disciplines into two categories,
