The slow loris is a shy mammal
with a face so doleful it would
melt a cowboy’s hear t. It usually
has a coat in shades of white and
brown. Its face is painted with two
large teardrop-shaped markings
that give the loris its characteristic
woeful expression. Unfor tunately,
its unique appearance means
that it is in demand on the black
market, and many of these poor
animals are forced into horrible
conditions while traf ficked illegally.

What’s tiny, has long legs and big ears?
A baby kangaroo? Not quite. The jerboa, with
the face of Hello Kitty and the constitution of
the Energiser Bunny, is a ver y hardy animal
that is able to sur vive scorching deser t
conditions. The jerboa has tiny hands that
it keeps out of sight, tucked under its large
head – unless it is eating. It has a long,
muscular tail that it uses for balance as it
bounds around on its pair of spindly legs.
Thick hairs keep the jerboa’s feet cool on
deser t sands. Good things really do come
in small packages!
