Getting Catty About Kitty
O
n one hand you see cats
who are almost fanatic
about grooming and
about the place they
pee and poo. And on the other
you hear and see them at their
worst when they throw things off
counters just for fun, when they
stare at you when you want to
play and walk away when you
want them to come to you. Are
cats really trainable? We have
very different opinions!
Neeru Morwal, chef: There
is great difference between
the attitude of cats and dogs.
My dog, Tyson listens to me
more than my cat, Kitty. A dog
follows his master whereas a cat
prefers the home because she
believes that’s going to comfort
her. Unlike dogs, cats are shy
creatures and it’s in their genes.
My cat didn’t want to be trained
to shake hands or bring a ball
like Tyson does. Cats like to
live in their own space and play
games they like.
Mohana Sathye, student:
According to me, no they
cannot. They have their own
sets of rules and expect us to
follow them. They train us really
well, though, it doesn’t work the
other way around. They sleep
wherever they want, jump on
us at random times at night
inspite of telling them not to.
You wave a toy at them, and
if they’re not in the mood they
won’t even spare you a glance.
Cats don’t have masters, they
have staff.
Seema Dighe Rasal, vocalist: Kittu
listens to all my commands - from
come here to stay. His favourite
question is, “do you want a treat?” So
yes, cats are trainable! Kittu is well
trained and walks on and off leash
like a good boy. A very vocal cat and
will join in any conversation with his
mews. He makes himself heard very
well, especially if he wants us to get
up from his place on the sofa!
Timma Srivastava, artist:
My Kim and Paris are good
girls. They are not selfish or
disobedient. Both listen to
commands and will stop their
antics if I catch them, especially
when they want to climb up
where I don’t want them to.
There are so many small small
things where I can see that they
are not just trained but also very
intelligent. Of course one has to
make room for their naughtiness!
