Marie Claire South Africa — January 2018

A

thi-Patra Ruga’s new
body of work displayed
at Whatiftheworld
Gallery in Cape Town,
titled ‘Queens in Exile’, brings to life
an enchanted world crafted from
collective memory and exclusionary
national myth. He dreams up a
world where many queens can rule
at once. The multidisciplinary work
includes tapestry, photography and
video, and is deeply emotive and
compelling. Athi-Patra returns from
an extended run at the Fondation
Louis Vuitton in Paris, where his
work was exhibited in ‘Art/Afrique,
le nouvel atelier’ – a collective
exhibition celebrating Africa’s
fi nest artists. He has also recently
exhibited at Performa 17 in New
York, the San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art and Biennale Arte
in Venice. If you miss his local
exhibition, running until the end
of January, you can also see his
work in Phaidon’s book, Younger
than Jesus – a stunning compilation
of 500 of the best international
artists under the age of 33.
