TERRACE IDOL
England international Matt Le Tissier
was Southampton’s top scorer in nine
seasons, netting many spectacular
match-winning efforts.
Idolised by Saints supporters, the
brilliant Channel Islander made his
league debut at Sheffield Wednesday two
months before turning professional in
October 1986 and an early indication of
his prodigious talents was a memorable
hat-trick against Leicester City in March
- He was PFA Young Player of the
Year in 1990 and scored for Saints in the
1992 ZDS Cup Final at Wembley. There was a spell in the mid-1990s
when his goals saved Saints from relegation season after season and
that, combined with his loyalty, won him near God-like status from a
generation of fans. Netting 162 times in 443 league games, including
his late winner against Arsenal in the last-ever match at The Dell in
May 2001, he retired shortly before his testimonial in May 2002. He
now works in the media, notably for Sky.
CUP GLORY
Southampton won the FA Cup for the only time
in 1976. Jim McCalliog scored twice as Saints
beat Aston Villa 2-1 in the Third Round Replay,
then Mick Channon netted two in their 3-1 Fourth

Channon grabbed a hat-trick in the 4-0 Fifth Round
Replay victory over West Bromwich Albion and
McCalliog’s goal clinched
a 1-0 Sixth Round win at
Bradford City. David Peach and Paul Gilchrist scored
in Saints’ 2-0 Semi-Final victory over Crystal Palace.
Bobby Stokes’ late strike beat Manchester United
1-0 in the Final. Southampton’s team at Wembley
was: Ian Turner, Peter Rodrigues, David Peach, Nick
Holmes, Mel Blyth, Jim Steele, Paul Gilchrist, Mick
Channon, Peter Osgood, Jim McCalliog, Bobby Stokes.
