THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

The Looming Tower (Prime,
9.35pm). The evening’s
nostalgia/post-traumatic stress
disorder trip continues with a
free-to-air run for the dramatic
miniseries that originally aired
here on SoHo. It’s based on
American author Lawrence
Wright’s book The Looming
Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road
to 9/11 and the catastrophic
rivalries between the FBI and
CIA that helped create the
space for the terror attacks.
It’s especially notable for
Jeff Daniels’ Emmy-winning
performance.

Rock‘n’Roll Guns for Hire: The
Story of the Sideman (Prime,
8.30pm). We’ve had the
backing singers (20 Feet from
Stardom), now it’s the turn
of the hired guitar-slingers.
Long-time Bowie guitarist Earl
Slick, Wendy and Lisa and
Steve Cropper all talk about
life when you’re in the band,
but not in the band and the
Rolling Stones turn up to heap
praise on Bernard Fowler,
who, it turns out, has not
only been the band’s onstage
backing vocalist since 1988,
but is also the man in charge

of remembering how all the
songs go. Given Fowler’s addi-
tional history with cult legends
Tackhead and the Peech Boys,
he’s probably the most influ-
ential performer you’ve never
heard of.

Grand Designs New Zealand
(Three, 7.30pm). Yes, we’ve
already featured this new
season recently – but this time
it’s a tree house! This week’s
builders Rik and Boio bought
a lifestyle block in Hanmer
Springs to retire to, but

school student to set out to
conquer the world’s three
great ice caps?
For Jade Hameister, it was
family first. Her mountaineer
father took her to Mt Everest
base camp at the age of 12.
There, she met an Icelandic
woman who had completed
a solo expedition to the South

Pole – and it was her stories
that sparked Hameister’s
dream to do the triple: the
North Pole, the South Pole and
Greenland.
Her father not only
encouraged her, but joined
her on the journeys captured
in the feature documentary

MasterChef Australia (TVNZ
1, 7. 30pm). It’s the head-to-
head series final and they’ve
brought in the big gun. Heston
Blumenthal appears as guest
judge as the two finalists com-
pete for the MasterChef title
and the $250,000 that comes
with it. (If you can’t live with-
out MasterChef in your life, a
new season of MasterChef USA
begins at 7.30pm, Thursday
night on Prime, with Gordon
Ramsay and Christina Tosi up
front and the likes of Wolfgang
Puck lined up as guest judges.)
