T

he Nieuport 10 was
originally designed by
Gustave Delage to compete
in the Gordon Bennett Trophy
race of 1914; however, the First
World War caused this contest
to be cancelled, and the type was
developed as a military two-
seat reconnaissance aircraft
that entered service in 1915.

THE KIT
Special Hobby provides the kit
with two sprues with nice moulded
fabric detail; one resin part; photo-
etch; film for the windscreen;
and three decal options. I washed
the sprues in warm soapy water
to remove mould release from
them prior to assembly.

CONSTRUCTION
The first main task was painting
all the wood parts, such as the
struts, control surfaces, wood
flooring, and seats, using Daler

and Rowley Burnt Umber oil paint.
After allowing them to dry for
a week I could start building.
I started assembly with the
various parts for the cockpit;
once assembled, it gives a good
representation of an early aircraft.
With the fuselage together, sanding
was required along the bottom
as well as a small area behind
the crew’s seated position.
The lower wings were then
added, as well as the elevators, both
of which fitted with minimal filler.
I decided to leave the top wing off
until after the painting stage.

PAINTING
I was originally planning on
painting the aircraft in Tamiya’s
XF-55 Deck Tan but found this
looked too dark. I did some
research and found Humbrol’s 74
quite a suitable colour for early
First World War aircraft linen.
This was thinned with Humbrol
Thinner before being airbrushed
over the entire model, followed
