Pedal power

SERIES I clutch and brake pedals are mounted on
rods whichpass down through thefootwell and
areconnectedto levers below the driver’s fl oor.
Comparedto the later Series II and III, theSeriesI
has a purely mechanically-operated clutch in
which a shaftcontrolledby the clutch pedal
passessideways through the chassis and into the
bellhousingto work directly on the clutchrelease
mechanism.The brake pedal mechanism on this
early model alsopassesunder thefl oor and
through the chassis,to work on thehydraulic
master cylinder mounted to a web on the insideof
the chassis main longitudinalsection. All these
components have beenstrippedto bare metal,
treated, primed, andfi nished insatin black.

Steering gear
This steering box with
integralcolumnwas fi tted
to theearliest models.
Later Series I 88-inch
models have a box similar
to thatof the SII and III.

Power and
steering
The steeringrelay is now
fi tted into the chassis
front crossmember, anda
battery istest-fitted into
thecombined airfi lter
support andbattery tray.

Shaft support
The bulkhead-mounted bracket locates thesteeringtube usinga
rudimentary clamp and rubber insert. The shaft inside is supported
by an adjustableball bearingrace, checked andset.

Accelerator
This housing, bolted on the frontof the driverfootwell,
supports the accelerator pedal and its crossshaft, which
is ultimately linkedto thecarburettor throttle control.

Go pedal
In thefootwell, the accelerator pedal is clamped on the
crossshaft inside the housing.Two boltsto the left hold
theexternal bracket supporting the crossshaft.
