Rebuilding

Newparts

13

The newA-frameball joint is supplied
mounted on its fulcrum bracket, and
complete with newcastellated nut,washer
and split pin. New bolts also obtained.

Rebuild

14

Re-assembly is areversal, entering
the ball jointstud through the axle
bracket, then loosely fi tting the bolts
holding the armsto the fulcrum bracket.

Pinned down

15

The newcastellated nut andwasher
are fi tted and tightened fi rst, then the
new pin isfi tted and bent only enoughto
keep it in.

SOME Defender 110, 130 and RangeRovers are fi tted
with a Bogeself-le veling unit mounted from the chassis
crossmemberto a specialcup which ispart of the ful-
crum bracket casting. This fulcrum bracket is expensive
so it is not possible to buy aball joint and fulcrum
bracket assembly as one piece. Instead, the fulcrum
bracket can be removed and areplacementball joint
fi tted to it. A hydraulic press is neededto remove and
replace theball joint from the fulcrum bracket, and it’s
often po ssible to ge t this doneby a localgarage.

Bolted

16

Finally, the nuts are tightened on
the two bolts holding the fulcrum
bracket between theA-frame arms.
Anti-seize grease on all threads helps it
come apart next time.
